The Manitoba Book Awards 2010 were presented on April 25 and in the Young People's categories the following were selected from a very strong field:

McNally Robinson Book of the Year for Young People Award (Younger Category)- Timmerman Was Here by Colleen Sydor, published by Tundra Books.

Since the event's inception in 1989, during which a single award (the McNally Robinson Book Award) was presented, the Manitoba Book Awards (formerly the Manitoba Writing and Publishing Awards) has grown to feature 13 categories. Digital Detox Week by Tracy Howard - Wednesday, Apr 07, 2010 at 3:31pm

Too Much Technology?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, two hours daily should be the upper limit for children's television viewing. In a report on the television viewing habits of 4th graders, 36% watched 1-2 hours a day, while 18% watched 6 or more hours.

And that doesn't include the number of hours tweens and teens spent on Facebook, surfing the net, texting, and listening to music!

Jane Recommends ...Irish Chain By: Barbara Haworth-attard by McNally Robinson - Wednesday, Apr 14, 2010 at 11:37am

Jane is 10 years old, lives in Toronto and wants to be a famous author when she grows up. In the meantime she helps out McNally Robinson by reviewing books for young readers.

Rose lives in Halifax during 1917 and hates school. She is great at telling stories from her grandma's Irish Chain quilt but it takes her three hours just to write a sentence down on paper. Because of this she has been held back a few years in school and if she is held back one more year she will be in the same class as her little sister Winnie! Then the explosion happens and Rose blames herself. Will Rose's life ever be the same again?

I think that Irish Chain was a brilliant book and that everyone should read it.
