Teaming up with the Moose & Blades

by Tyler Vitt - Wednesday, Jan 24, 2018 at 4:41pm

McNally Robinson is again teaming up with the Manitoba Moose and the Saskatoon Blades to celebrate "I Love to Read" Month in February.

Students and teachers can enter their classroom for a chance to win school visits from their local teams, and McNally Robinson is excited to sponsor a special "I Love to Read" hockey game in each city. And in Saskatoon, we'll be hosting a special breakfast with the Blades in Prairie Ink!

Both classroom contests are on now, with the Saskatoon Blades contest ending February 12th, 2018, and the Manitoba Moose's ending February 15th 2018. So hurry and enter your class via the links below!

Celebrating I Love To Read Month with the Blues & Moose

by Tyler Vitt - Tuesday, Feb 09, 2016 at 2:37pm

February is I Love To Read Month, and McNally Robinson is proud to be teaming up with the Winnipeg Blues and the Manitoba Moose to celebrate literacy in our schools and community.

Throughout the month, the Winnipeg Blues will be visiting schools across Winnipeg to exercise both the minds and bodies of students with their Read and Run program. Players from the Blues will be reading to classes, answering their questions about hockey, and then leading each class in a run. Each school will also be entered in to a draw to win a donation of books from McNally Robinson for their library.

Meanwhile, the Manitoba Moose will be celebrating with their Stick to Reading initiative. Students and teachers from Winnipeg schools can enter for their chance to win a visit from Moose players, where the players will interact with the students and read to them in their classroom. For more information about how schools can enter, visit the Moose website here.

The Manitoba Moose will also be accepting donations of new or gently used children's books to give to schools and community services. The donations can be dropped off at our Grant Park bookstore, and for each donation you will receive a buy-one-get-one-free voucher for tickets to the Stick To Reading Moose game on March 28th, as well as a ballot for a chance to win a signed Josh Morrisey jersey.

Thank you to the Winnipeg Blues and the Manitoban Moose for taking such a keen interest in supporting literacy and helping to foster a better future for our students. McNally Robinson is eager and proud to sponsor their cause.

• On Wednesday, John Toone launched his brand new book, Fishin' For Dumbasses, inside of Prairie Ink Winnipeg. Lovely event with a fullhouse, which brought the book to #2 in Winnipeg Paperback Non-Fiction bestsellers.
    • Another big event happened Thursday night in our Winnipeg store: the launch of The Confabulist, the new novel by Steven Galloway. This event was particularly exciting because Mr. Galloway is our current Author of the Month!
• Want to win a copy of Ariel Gordon's funny collection of poetry, Stowaways? If you're in Winnipeg, you can. Just check out our #StowawaysMRB contest on Twitter, or enter to win via PM on Facebook.

A letter from Erin McHugh, author of Like My Mother Always Said...

by Tyler Vitt - Tuesday, May 06, 2014 at 10:31am

The following is a letter sent to us from Erin McHugh, author of the wonderful, witty, and hilarious new book Like My Mother Always Said... which is now available in hardcover.

And after the letter, learn how you can get yourself a free signed copy of the book...

Dear Kids,

And I do mean "Kids," no matter what your age. You're someone's son or daughter, because it just so happens that everyone has a mother. Everyone! And people tend to quote their moms, rely on their advice, and refer back to something she said probably more than they ever realize.

How do I know? Because that's exactly how my book came to be.

(Read more of Ms. McHugh's letter after the jump...)

Weekly Roundup (Apr. 19-25)

by Tyler Vitt - Thursday, Apr 24, 2014 at 9:09pm

Happy Friday! Let's recap the past seven days of MRB news in this, possibly the biggest Roundup to date!

NEW RELEASES from the past seven days BESTSELLERS
     > Fiction books      > Winnipeg Bestsellers based on this week's sales
     > Non-Fiction books      > Saskatoon Bestsellers based on last week's sales

< < <   Some highlights of the week   < < <

NEW RELEASES: Available this week in hardback is also Struck by Genius, the account of Jason Padgett and how a brain injury made him a math wizard.     NEW RELEASES: The long anticipated paperback edition of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl is now out!
NEW RELEASES: Another long-anticipated paperback release: Shred: The Revolutionary Diet by Ian Smith.     NEW RELEASES/BESTSELLERS/EVENTS: Luann Hiebert's poetry collection What Lies Behind was released this week. And our Winnipeg store hosted a launch for it this week. Aaand it's a bestseller this week! A strong start for a lovely book.
NEW RELEASES/BESTSELLERS: The newest novel by Christopher Moore is out! Entitled The Serpent of Venice, this book is classic Moore -- witty, absurd, and hilarious. And quite popular, as within a few days it's already on our Winnipeg Hardcover Fiction bestsellers.     CONTESTS: Speaking of The Serpent of Venice, we've got some signed copies to give away! Visit us on Twitter for all the details and to enter.
EVENTS/BESTSELLERS: On Tuesday we hosted the launch of Water: Reflections on Thirst, Thanks and Truth by Writers Unblocked, a new collective of local authors. The event was a rousing success, which helped propel Water to #1 in Paperback Fiction bestsellers.     EVENTS/BESTSELLERS: This week our Winnipeg store also saw the launch of In the Tiger Park, a collection of poetry by Alison Calder. Unsurprisingly, the book is at #3 in Paperback Fiction bestsellers this week.
BESTSELLERS: Mary-Ann Kirkby's Secrets of a Hutterite Kitchen came out just last week, and already it's a Winnipeg bestseller. It'll probably remain as one, especially considering Ms. Kirkby's launch happening on April 28th inside of our Grant Park store.     EVENTS/BESTSELLERS: Just last night, Thursday, we hosted two separate events for two separate authors in our Winnipeg store (as well as the launch of a school journal, but that's another story). In our Travel Alcove we hosted the launch of Brenda Barrie's An Unorthodox Romance, and in Prairie Ink we hosted the launch of Brenda Hasiuk's childrens book Your Constant Star. Both events had great crowds, and both books appeared on this week's Bestsellers lists (in a single night!) in the Paperback Fiction and Books for Young People categories.
