Winnipeg Author Duncan Thornton wins $15,000 Award by Alexandra Kroeger - Friday, Jul 08, 2011 at 9:49am

Local children's author Duncan Thornton is one of seven lucky recipients of the 2011 Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Awards from the Canada Council for the Arts. These awards, worth $15,000 each, recognize outstanding artistic achievement by mid-career artists in Dance, Inter-Arts, Media Arts, Music, Theater, Visual Arts and Writing and Publishing.

We have carried Thornton's novels since his debut, Kalifax, was published in 1999, and we are terribly excited for him. Congratulations!

Sunburst Award Shortlists Announced by Chadwick Ginther - Monday, Jul 04, 2011 at 3:18pm

The Sunburst Award, named for author Phyllis Gotlieb's first novel, is a juried prize celebrating Canadian literature of the fantastic. It has both an adult and young adult category. The winners of the Sunburst Award will be announced September 14, 2011 as part of Authors at Harbourfront Centre's weekly reading series. Jurors for 2011 are Julie Czerneda, Kate Freiman, Mark Leslie, Christopher Roden, and Alison Sinclair.

Gifts to the fund are permanently endowed and the income generated supports inter-generational literacy projects at community organizations and library branches throughout the province.

The Canadian Children's Book Centre has announced the finalists for the 2011 TD Canadian Children's Literature Award, Prix TD de littérature canadienne pour l'enfance et la jeunesse, Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award, Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children's Non-Fiction, and the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People.

We at McNally Robinson Grant Park would like extend our special congratulations to Winnipeg author Martha Brooks, whose Queen of Hearts is a finalist for the $5,000 Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People. See the website for a full list of all of the finalists.
