Saskatoon's Parkland Publishing Wins the 2011 Travel Media Award by Andrew Balfour - Wednesday, Apr 04, 2012 at 11:42am

On March 22, at the 23rd annual Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence Gala held at the Regina Inn Hotel & Conference Centre, Saskatchewan Best Hikes & Nature Walks (Softcover. $19.95) by Robin and Arlene Karpan was named the winner of the Travel Media Award.

Donner Prize Finalists Announced by Andrew Balfour - Wednesday, Apr 04, 2012 at 2:28pm

Allan Gotlieb, chair of the Donner Canadian Foundation, revealed the shortlist for this year's $50,000 Donner Prize. The four nominated books on public policy by Canadian authors touch on inclusivity in museum practices, obesity and global public health, Constitutional reform, and immigration policy for skilled workers.

The finalists for the 14th annual award are:

Museum Pieces: Toward the Indigenization of Canadian Museums by Ruth B. Phillips, McGill-Queen's University press

XXL: Obesity and the Limits of Shame by Neil Seeman and Patrick Luciani, University of Toronto Press

Democratizing the Constitution: Reforming Responsible Government by Peter Aucoin, Mark D. Jarvis, and Lori Turnbull, Emond Montgomery Publications

Toward Improving Canada's Skilled Immigration Policy: An Evaluation Approach by Charles M. Beach, Alan G. Green, and Christopher Worswick, C.D. Howe Institute

The winner will be named at an awards ceremony in Toronto on May 1. Each runner-up will receive $7,500. In the past, the prize has been presented to Doug Saunders (Arrival City, 2011) and Brian Bow (The Politics of Linkage, 2010).

Shortlist Announced for the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour by Andrew Balfour - Wednesday, Apr 04, 2012 at 11:07am

The shortlist for the 2012 Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour has been announced. The Leacock Memorial Medal is a prestigious annual honour, accompanied by a $15,000 prize, awarded for the best in Canadian humour writing. The award has attained an international reputation and is the only award of its kind for Canadian humour writing.

The winner will be announced at the Leacock Luncheon on April 26. The Leacock Medal and the accompanying $15,000 prize will be awarded on June 9 at the annual award gala.

Manitoba Book Awards Shortlists Announced by Andrew Balfour - Friday, Mar 16, 2012 at 4:43pm

The Manitoba Writers' Guild and the Association of Manitoba Book Publishers announced the Manitoba Book Awards shortlists for books published in 2011 yesterday. The 2012 awards will be presented at the Manitoba Book Awards gala, on Saturday April 28th at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain and hosted by Drek Daa. Cocktails are at 7:00 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 8:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

The shortlists and recipients are selected by a variety of juries, comprised of writers, publishers and other book industry personnel from across Canada.

    2012 Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction Awarded by Chadwick Ginther - Tuesday, Mar 06, 2012 at 10:05am

    Author Andrew Westoll has been awarded the Charles Taylor prize for his book The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary: A Canadian Story of Resilience and Recovery. The Charles Taylor Foundation awards the $25,000 prize to the author whose book "best combines a superb command of the English language, an elegance of style, and a subtlety of thought and perception."
