Coral Hetherington was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba where she still currently resides. The idea of Gus the Wrong-Way Goose was inspired by her youngest son Sean, his struggle with Dyslexia and his ability to “find his own way”. She conceived the story back in 1994 with the hopes that one day her oldest son, Eric, would illustrate it for her.

Dyslexics often have trouble with direction. Not knowing left and right causes difficulties with b’s an d’s, p’s and q’s, tying shoe laces, knowing which way to turn and a myriad of other situations that have to be faced each day. For Gus the Wrong -Way Goose he too faces the problems of “being different”, the confusion about left and right and the sting of being ridiculed.

Coral has had a varied and exciting working career including being a freelance writer/ producer, a Media Specialist for the Manitoba Government, a television instructor at Red River College and an entrepreneur. Presently she is the Accounts Manager at Brematson & Associates, a company that advocates for the disabled. Eric Hetherington is a graduate of Digital Multimedia Technology from Red River College. He has been drawing since he could hold a pencil and works as a freelance artist, designer and videographer. This is their first book but they hope to continue collaborating to create further adventures for Gus.

It is hoped that when reading Gus the Wrong- Way Goose children, parents and teachers will understand a little bit better some of the challenges dyslexia creates. In addition to learning about directions, topics for discussion can include bullying, teasing, self-esteem, coping skills and the fact that not all disabilities are visible.
